Wood House Preparation and Painting Procedures

Buckeye Painting and Decks' reputation for quality workmanship and customer satisfaction has come from years of experience. Most of our experience comes from working in the Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights, and Chagrin Falls' areas. Many of these beautiful and sometimes historic houses are made of wood or have wood trim on them. In order to maintain the character of these houses, we feel that “just another paint job” is not good enough.

In the years that Buckeye Painting and Decks has been in business we have developed a system that we feel is the best way to prepare and paint exterior wood surfaces using the best products available. Our priorities are to provide a product which will last much longer than the 'scrape and paint' method common amongst other contractors and to produce a more attractive end result (smoother flat surfaces and greater detail on trim and moldings). Here is an explanation of Buckeye Painting and Decks' system for preparing and painting wood houses:

When preparing peeling, previously painted wood, we start with the 7in. or 4in. disc sanders with 24 grit discs to remove all of the failing paint from the surface feathering out any remaining paint edges. These are powerful tools. They not only remove the peeling paint, they remove any loose paint that may peel in the years to come. The only paint that is left on the surface is paint that is securely adhered to the wood and shouldn't cause any peeling problems. Next, we switch to an 80 grit disc and go over the area again to further smooth paint edges and remove swirls in the surface created by the 24 grit discs. This will leave a surface that is much smoother than just scraping and will allow the wood to accept primer well. Any areas not accessible with the sanders will be scraped. All loose or failing paint will be scraped off until a sound surface is left.

There are two objectives in preparing wood surfaces for paint:

The first is a functional one. The sanders open up the grain of the wood and create a porous surface for the primer and paint to penetrate and adhere. This consists of sanding/scraping the peeling paint, priming the bare wood with a good oil primer and putting on a good topcoat(s) of paint. The new paint job protects the wood from being damaged by rain or sun.

The second objective is a cosmetic one. The reason for using the sanders and fine sanding after the peeling paint has been removed is simply to make the surface look better. The fine sanding step helps to restore the smooth surface to the wood. This is especially important on ground level areas and other easily seen areas.

Whether you're trying to maintain the integrity of your wood house, or you're just tired of having someone paint it every few years, Buckeye Painting and Decks understands the individual needs of our customers and will work to provide them with an end result they exceeds their expectations.
